Explaining the Momentum System: Momentum, not Streaks
Habit streaks are fundamentally flawed.
They help you get going, until you miss a day. 😬
Then you have to start all over again...
Streaks promote an all-or-nothing mindset, making it seem like your success depends on never missing a day and showing up even when you don’t feel like it. And when you don’t, they make you feel guilty for breaking the chain—for being human. 🤷🏽♀️
They also don’t help you get back on track when you inevitably fall off the wagon.
That’s why there are no streaks in Polar Habits! 🐻❄️
Instead, we’ve designed a Momentum system that makes it okay to skip a few days here and there, helping you feel successful even after taking a well-deserved break.
No fear, no guilt, no pressure! 😌
How it works
The Momentum system in Polar Habits is based on points. You earn Momentum points for showing up, and you lose points for missing days.
- +1 +2 +3 and so on… as you keep showing up
- -1 -2 -3 and so on… as you miss days
The longer you keep up a habit, the faster you earn points, and, the longer you continue to miss your goals, the faster you lose them. As long as you don’t let missed days pile up, your Momentum moves up and to the right! 📈
That’s the gist of it, and all you really need to know, but…
There’s math… 😅
Understanding the formula behind the Momentum system isn’t important at all.
It’s all about visualizing your momentum (we do this for you) and how it makes you feel, not the numbers!
But, if you’re just curious about the numbers, or you really want to geek out, we’re happy to tell you all about it!
Okay okay, I read the warning...
